Nordegg at a Glance
The journey to Nordegg along David Thompson Highway #11 reveals the quiet beauty
of this serene area with its incredible variety of wildflowers, wildlife and stunning
mountain scenery. Located in the foothills of the Rocky
Mountains, Nordegg is about a three-hour drive from Calgary,
far from the hectic energy of an urban centre, yet close enough to a large city
to be easily accessible. Much of this area is wild and untouched. Once a booming
coal town, Nordegg now hosts tourists and honours the development of Canada's
coal resources at the Nordegg
Heritage Centre and Brazeau Collieries, one of Canada's most complete industrial
museum. Nearby lakes and mountains offer opportunities for recreational activity
and adventure at several provincial recreational
areas, which are traversed by a number of trails including a 10,000-year-old
First Nations' Trail. Activities in and around Nordegg include cave exploration,
heli-skiing, biking, dog sledding, river kayaking, ice climbing, big-game hunting,
fishing, canoeing and more.
